over the past few years I’ve tried more and more to be gentler with myself. i was talking to a student today about how easy it is for high-achievers to be hyper-self-critical and how particularly susceptible we are to burnout. sometimes it’s hard for me to see the goodness that i bring to each and every space, so i tend to beat myself down for my short-comings.

too often have I held myself back by being hard on myself or by being stuck thinking that I’m not good enough. I’ve been working instead on just showing up as I am, doing the best that I can, and trusting that that is enough.

been posting a lot about my music lately (if you didn’t notice lol), but… I haven’t been able to sit down and share much directly about the album’s overarching theme.

today I got a package delivered for a small @scitechband project that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. new photos for the frames in our music hallway at school. (note- these are just a few of them - more to come)

Since I started pursuing this songwriting thing again three years ago, I’ve struggled with how to be both a music educator and an active singer-songwriter. I just feel like the world loves to put us all into boxes. That’s the way we make sense of people and where they fit in — where WE fit in.

But what if you feel like you *sort of* fit in to a few different places? Or no places at all?

Figuring out who you’re meant to be is a complicated business, in a world that is constantly sending you messages about what you can or can’t be.

But knowing that you are valued, that you have worth, and that you have a purpose, ESPECIALLY in the parts of your life where you really don’t feel like people get you — I’ve discovered that for me, that’s all I really need. And I learned that from my @scitechband family. These are people who pursue fulfillment, meaning, joy, love, healing, and purpose more than anyone I’ve ever known.

working on other cool things behind the scenes but life’s a bit wild so I don’t want to share too many details just yet. I will say that I’m doing the best I can right now to get new music out to you all. I know it’s been a long time coming. Doing this work and pursuing this dream of mine on top of being a full-time music educator has meant that I have to take my time on things, and I’m okay with that right now. I love my kids and my co-workers and the @scitechband program. I’ll give that my all, even if it means navigating this balance between teaching music and creating it.

I’m not the biggest fan of social media in part because sometimes it can be challenging to communicate these complicated areas of life, the areas where it’s not black and white, where it’s not just all success or all failure, where it’s not an extreme. I’m finding that a lot of the time, life is existing in the grey areas. there’s hardship and pain but there’s also joy and fullness and goodness, if you’re courageous and brave enough to look for it.

life’s a journey and I’m grateful to be living it learning through it all by the grace of God.

working on other cool things behind the scenes but life’s a bit wild so I don’t want to share too many details just yet. I will say that I’m doing the best I can right now to get new music out to you all. I know it’s been a long time coming. Doing this work and pursuing this dream of mine on top of being a full-time music educator has meant that I have to take my time on things, and I’m okay with that right now. I love my kids and my co-workers and the @scitechband program. I’ll give that my all, even if it means navigating this balance between teaching music and creating it.

I’m not the biggest fan of social media in part because sometimes it can be challenging to communicate these complicated areas of life, the areas where it’s not black and white, where it’s not just all success or all failure, where it’s not an extreme. I’m finding that a lot of the time, life is existing in the grey areas. there’s hardship and pain but there’s also joy and fullness and goodness, if you’re courageous and brave enough to look for it.

life’s a journey and I’m grateful to be living it learning through it all by the grace of God.

A post about teaching because it’s been a while since I officially posted about the other side of my life!

Being done with grad school (for now, at least) means I’m actually spending my time applying the things that I learned and testing out new methods and strategies for the benefit of the determined and hard-working young people in front of me.

I’m telling you all- these students are INVESTED. Of course I am so blessed to teach a subject that naturally lends itself to support individuality, personalized learning, and diversity (all things that this generation greatly values). I’m excited to see the education community continue to increase in its baseline capacity to do this across all subject areas.

I wish all educators could feel liberated by the reality that we don’t enter this profession having all the answers, and also that we don’t miraculously figure it all out just by doing the work for a certain number of years. It should be freeing to know that continued learning is a part of the work— to know that we simply can’t have all of the answers and that continued development of our teaching practices is just a part of the hang. And spoiler alert- how can we encourage our kids to be lifelong learners if we don’t model what that looks like, with our own lives?

Yesterday I started one of our Advanced Band rehearsals by having everybody take three deep breaths in and out. It was the first time I’ve done something like that as a teacher, and honestly it wasn’t planned. I sensed the stress and tension in the room and their longing for resolve and direction, as I got on the podium and put my hand up to start rehearsal. At the end of those collective deep breaths it was clear that all of us needed those few seconds to just breathe. (And of course, their full band warmup immediately following those deep breaths, sounded amazing. But that’s besides the point.)

There’s a lot of stuff in life we can’t control. Things that happen, things that people say, rules that have been set, expectations and standards for us to meet. And sometimes as a society I think we’re tricked into just complying and going through the motions. But there’s something powerful about being able to reclaim our individual agency and ability to create goodness, on the daily. Reclaiming our breath, reclaiming our thoughts, reclaiming our direction, reclaiming our humanity. That’s empowerment and it’s what I want for myself and for my kids.
